Guide to World Series Of Poker

Just by looking at the 2000 and 2008 Main Events, you can see what a leap in popularity the World Series Of Poker has experienced.  In 2008, 6,844 people registered for the Main event of the tournament.  Just 8 years earlier, in 2000, only 512 people entered to play.

Game Expansion

Another thing that has probably helped the popularity of the WSOP is the game expansion.  It's not just for Texas Holdem poker players anymore.  In fact, there are now events like Stud, Omaha and Razz held as WSOP events all the time.  There's even a HORSE event, which many players are pushing to have as the yearly Main Event game.

You see, a lot of players feel that there's more to best online poker players than just Texas Holdem.  A person who is good at HORSE shows well-rounded skills.  In many people's eyes, it's that person that should be called “Champion”.

As it stands right now, though, the Main Event winner has to have some serious Texas Holdem skills, if they want to walk away with the title, the gold bracelet and the money.

So, if you're looking to be a Main Event contender, make sure that you really practice and sharpen your Texas Holdem skills, first.  Don't jump right in and play such a major tournament unprepared.  Know the game and understand the stamina and endurance it takes to succeed at it.  Only then can you become a poker champion.
